So what exactly are we looking at here? Well, I’ve been experimenting with swarming for a while now and wanted to make a video that combines my photography and particles effects that will draw my images for me in a pointillistic fashion. The particles reveal images as they move along in a swarm, their movement is based on a flocking algorithm that I have tweaked to move in a wave-like fashion, hence the music selection (Malibu Beach by Tiesto). The particles react to sound as well, specifically, each particle represents a sample of sound in the current sound buffer, thus as the waveform of the sound changes the particles become animated and vary the pointillism effect. The end pieces looks like an oil painting and has a very organic crayon feel. I included a narrative in this piece by controlling which images were shown and when they were exposed to the viewer. This piece represents my explorations and adventures in Northern California with my girlfriend.
I am definitely going to include this concept/idea in the VJ software I am developing.
